Amalkanti – Poet Nirendranath Chakraborty

Amalkanti is my friend,
We used to study together in school.
He was always late to class, never knew his lessons.
If asked about word forms,
He would stare out the window in such amazement
That it pained us to see.

Some of us wanted to be teachers, some doctors, some lawyers.
But Amalkanti wanted none of those.
He wanted to become sunlight!
That shy sunlight on a drizzling, crow-calling afternoon,
The kind that lingers
Like a faint smile on the leaves of jamun and rose apple trees.

Some of us became teachers, some doctors, some lawyers.
But Amalkanti could not become sunlight.
Now, he works in a dark printing press.
Sometimes, he comes to visit me;
He drinks tea, chats about this and that, then says, "I should get going now."
I walk him to the door.

The one among us who became a teacher
Could have easily been a doctor.
The one who wanted to be a doctor
Wouldn’t have lost much if he had become a lawyer.
Yet, everyone’s wishes were fulfilled—except Amalkanti’s.
Amalkanti could not become sunlight.
And thinking about that Amalkanti—
The one who once wished to become sunlight—
I keep thinking… and thinking…
